WS/FCS Students Help Build Habitat House

By Gretchen Cundiff

Nine Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools high school students woke up bright and early on Saturday, Feb. 11 to help raise the walls of the McCants family’s future home.

Rachel McCants’s house will be the 14th Habitat house funded and built by youth in partnership with Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County. Student volunteers represented the Career Center, Reynolds, Reagan and John F. Kennedy high schools.

John Christian, a carpentry instructor at the Career Center, also lent a hand throughout the wall raising. Last month, students helped to build the walls, which were raised in a matter of seven hours along with installing Styrofoam and assembling scaffolding.

The next youth-build day is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 25, and any high school student age 16 or older is welcome to volunteer.
