Petree Teacher Creates Series of Bulletin Boards for Black History Month

By Josue G. Figueredo
Tech Support Assistant, Petree Elementary

During Black History Month activities at Petree Elementary, we have had the privilege of experiencing great moments in history shared by Mr. Will Sykes, ESL teacher. He is considered the resident historian at Petree.  He meticulously researches the history of our country and passes it along to our students.

He uses the information to create bulletin boards that attract student attention. They often include QR codes that can be scanned by a mobile device (cell phone, iPad, etc.) to access websites with additional information. He also inspires others to take on the challenge of sharing information in a unique way.

When asked what makes him so interested in history, he stated, “It has always fascinated me how close our history is to our everyday lives. It is all around us, yet it can still be difficult to see. We have to always work to shed light on what makes us who we are as a people, by looking at good times as well as bad. As far as the bulletin boards go, I just wanted to take advantage of the time our kids spend on their way to and from class. It makes me happy to hear them ask questions about things they read and see.”

We are grateful for the time he has invested to share his knowledge through seven bulletin boards throughout the building.  They are sure to generate a sense of curiosity and excitement about Black History.  Thank you, Mr. Sykes!
