The WS/FCS Magnet Schools have been undergoing
Professional Development on the national Magnet Pillars. This year's
focus is the first pillar of Equity and Diversity.
As such, Reynolds is focusing on equity and access this school year. We are looking at many aspects of how these topics fit into our lives--both here at school and in the broader world. As part of this focus, many students and teachers have the opportunity to use the Dispatches Exhibit at SECCA as a way to have a shared experience that can integrate with their curriculum.
The Dispatches Exhibit opened Nov. 1 and is "a multi-platform exhibition from the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art bringing together contemporary artists, Pulitzer-Prize winning photojournalists, and new media artists. These artists, visual storytellers, and activists don't just follow the frenetic speed of mainstream media. They send out their own dispatches, creating new works that redefine the world issues of our time." (Journal, October 30, 2016)
Students in English 4, World History, American History, Spanish for Native Speakers, Journalism, Dance, and Photography went to SECCA last week and interacted with these pieces by 38 artists. Museum educators and docents led the tours. Students responded to the "I Wish To Say" piece by writing their own postcard to the president. They created Election Yard Signs based on Freedoms they wish to have or things they wish to be free from.
Students will creatively respond to these pieces of art through their own "dispatches"--some written, some visual, some through music, theatre, or dance.
