On Oct. 29, the 2016 Forsyth County Invitational Robot
Run Tournament was held at Atkins Academic and Technology High School.
The Robot Run is an annual event for middle school
students in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools. Each school had a small team
of students that built and programmed a LEGO Mindstorms robot that used to
compete against other teams for a chance to win the LEGO trophy.
The Robot Run is designed to get students excited about STEM
(science, technology, engineering and math) With the guidance of an adult
coach, teams were given a real world problem to research and solve using the
robot that they built for the tournament.
This year’s theme was Animal Allies and teams had to
identify a problem where humans and animals interact and develop a solution
that makes the interaction better. Teams used STEM skills, critical thinking
skills, teamwork, and a little bit of imagination throughout the competition.
Before the competitions, teams presented their research
and explained their robot design. In the afternoon, teams will participate in a
tournament where they had a limited amount of time to score as many points as
possible. Each team had multiple robot runs
to try to achieve the highest score.
