Thanks to Owner of Comics Store, Griffith Elementary Students Receiving Comic Books

In the Winston-Salem Journal, reporter Michael Bragg writes about the owner of a comics store donating comics to students at Griffith Elementary. Photographer Andrew Dye took the picture.

Here is an excerpt:

Twin City Comic Con is just around the corner, and will feature a charitable incentive to benefit local elementary school students.

Bret Parks, owner of Ssalefish Comics, said proceeds from every ticket purchased for Sunday’s event will go toward comic books for a Title I school — or school with high percentages of children from low-income families.

“We just really just want to drive the point home that it’s a fun event and you can support a Title I school’s reading material and hopefully love of comics just by attending,” Parks said. “It’s a byproduct of something we hope you’d want to do anyway.”

He picked Griffith Elementary School as the recipient of the comic books because of proximity to the store, but for a personal connection, as well. His grandmother was once a lunch lady at the school.

“I had a lot of fun memories of having school pizza on the weekends and then stopping by and seeing the behind the scenes of the cafeteria and things like that,” Parks said. “So, as a little kid, that was always really cool. So when it came time to select a school that made the most sense to me, it was just important to my family background.”

They’re aiming for 1,000 comic books to hand out at Griffith as a way to celebrate Action Comics reaching issue No. 1,000, the single highest in comic book history.
