Parkland Student Receives ECHO Award

Jahmila Best, who is a junior at Parkland High School, has received an ECHO Award from the Winston-Salem Foundation.

The ECHO Awards, which were announced at the foundation’s Building Community celebration today, honor individuals as well as informal groups and organizations building social capital in the community.

Best, a member of the National Honor Society, has been a vital volunteer and youth leader for the community by helping to organize the nonprofit Neighbors for Better Neighborhoods and by conducting door-to-door interviews that invite residents to share their visions for their neighborhoods.

“By meeting people on their own doorsteps, Jahmila encourages open dialogue and is strengthening neighborhoods from within,” it says in the award announcement.

Best has also trained residents about community development strategies and encouraged neighbors to get to know each other as they work together to create a stronger community.
