This comes to us from Maggi Jackson, who – along with Blane
Sherman – coaches an Odyssey of the Mind Team at Hanes Magnet Middle:
I would love to pass along the happy
news that one of the Odyssey of the Mind teams from Hanes Magnet School won
first place at the recent State Tournament in East Carolina University and will
be traveling on to Michigan State University to represent Hanes and
Winston-Salem at the World Finals May. A team from Meadowlark Elementary
came in second and they, too, have an invitation to the World Finals.
Odyssey of the Mind is an international creative problem-solving program that
engages students in their learning by allowing their knowledge and ideas to
come to life in an exciting, productive environment. Participants build
self-confidence, develop life skills, create new friendships, and are able to
recognize and explore their true potential.
The Hanes Magnet Middle School Problem 3 team began working together in October of 2018. Over a six-month period, they brainstormed, designed, wrote and re-wrote, constructed, and problem solved to prepare for the N.C. Northern Regional competition on March 9, 2019, where they came in first place, advancing on to the state level.
Knowing competition
heats up at the state finals, the team re-evaluated their solution and made
enhancements to their set, costumes, and script, and presented a much improved
product at East Carolina University on April 6. Through a combination of
high scores in the spontaneous portion of the competition and a strong
performance of their long-term problem, this Hanes Problem 3 team came in first
place, beating out 13 other teams!
The members of the team are: Maya
Wood, Noah Boyce, Alexander Knott, Christopher Layman and Riley Sherman.
The team is working hard to raise money to pay for the trip. If you want to learn more about how you can support the team, you can reach Maggi Jackson at Jackson
