This comes to us from Leigh Ann Coble McDowell, who
teaches science at Early College of Forsyth:
Lyna Giao won an award
for her artwork at Earth Day Fair. She won not only for her age bracket but
also overall. There were over 160 applicants! She was awarded a certificate, glass-blown
art, Sawtooth Center membership and gelato gift certificate.
The Piedmont
Environmental Alliance (PEA) reached out to our school (and others) and asked
if our students would contribute a piece of art conveying what Earth Day meant
to them, to display at the Earth day Fair.
When I gave my Earth and
environmental students this assignment I left it very open and only gave the
instructions given by PEA. I was so impressed with so many beautiful, creative
and powerful pieces.
Lyna's work was done
with colored pencils on black construction paper. The detail in her work is
awesome! Showing a drop of water coming from a faucet and the drop is shown as
the Earth. Every aspect conveys pieces of conservation and human impact as well
as the connection in it all.
Giao had this to say: "
Art is not something that you have to think too much about, it is about going
with the flow."
"Lyna is a
wonderful, hard-working, kind, creative and genuine soul!” McDowell said. “It
is a delight having her in my Earth and environmental science class as she has
a compassion for our planet and the ability to convey her ideas through
beautiful, meaningful work."
McDowell posted the winning
work on her door.
