CTE Coordinator Named Regional Career Guidance Professional of the Year

Vicky Wheeler is the School-to-Career Coordinator/Academy Director for the school system’s Department of Career Technical Education.

At the N.C Association of Career-Technical Education’s summer conference, the association’s Guidance and Career Development Division named her the Northwest Region Career Guidance Professional of the Year.

“It was such a surprise and honor,” Wheeler said.

The directors of the school system’s CTE department – Shirley Bynum and Bruce Sherman – nominated her.

At the awards, they said: “Vicky is dedicated and has a strong passion for CTE. She is innovative and always looking for better ways to improve CTE regardless of what position she holds. She brings many years of CTE knowledge which is shared through her continuous advocacy and leadership.”

Wheeler said: “I am deeply honored to be recognized by my WS/FCS CTE Directors, career development coordinators and special populations coordinators especially after only one year of working in WS/FC Schools.”

“The CTE program in WS/FC Schools is awesome, and our students are fortunate to be surrounded by so many caring staff and wonderful career and technical opportunities to help them prepare for their future.”

Wheeler is now eligible to be considered for the state award. State winners will be announced at the state conference in October.

According to the association, “This award recognizes school counselors and career development professionals who have demonstrated commitment to connecting students with opportunities for success, shown innovation in career exploration and development, and have advocated for CTE as a viable option for all students.”
