On Friday, Oct. 2, the Random Acts of Kindness
(RAK) Club from Kingswood School visited Brenner Children’s Hospital to deliver
Band-Aids to families of the children on the seventh and ninth floors. The RAK
Club is a new student-run enrichment club started at this year at The Kingswood
School at the Children’s Home.
“The RAK just concluded our second
week of activities and we enjoyed the first field trip as a group,” said EC (Exceptional Children) teacher Cindi Ramirez who serves as club advisor. “The group organized a
Band-Aid Drive at our school to collect Band-Aids for families of children in
Brenner Children's Hospital. The students and teachers at Kingswood donated
Band-Aids during the week and collected about 2,000 Band-Aids to donate, with two
classes (Ms. Ramirez’s and Ms. Camille Lee-Hick’s class) winning a doughnut
party for donating the most Band-Aids!
“Today the club delivered
the Band-Aids to the hospital and talked with the nurses on the seventh and ninth
floors of the Ardmore Tower at Wake Forest Baptist Hospital.
“There were four
students who took part in today’s club activities and one student who was
absent. The students who attended were Quevon Richardson, Tylor Bowles, Ben
Nacez, and Wendy Shackett. The student who is a part of the club and planning
who was unable to join us is Mikayla Rorie.
“Also taking part in the
field trip were three teachers (Ms. Ramirez, Mr. Charles Thomas and Ms. Tamika Lindsay),
The Principal (Rod Dupree), Dr. Gwendolyn Johnson-Green, and Wendy’s mom and
sister.
“While on the seventh
floor, the RAK club met several nurses. The group had a few questions for the
nurses. One question that was asked by Ben was ‘How do you give out Band-Aids
to families that need them?’
“Nurse Maria Fretre, CMA
responded “We will use these Band-Aids to make kids feel better when they get
shots”.
“Wendy then explained,
“Well we have many different Band-Aids that will help with that. There are
minions, dinosaurs, colored ones, and many others.”
“On the ninth floor Q
asked the nurses ‘What Band-Aid do you use most at the hospital?
“Nurse Rhonda Blackwell,
NAII said, ‘The most popular Band-Aid is the superhero ones for buys but the
girls enjoy receiving princess Band-Aids.’
“Patricia McCoy, a lab technician,
further explained ‘The girls also enjoy receiving Frozen Band-Aids and The Little
Mermaid.’
“Overall, the trip was a
big hit with everyone and Dr. Johnson-Green hit the nail on the head when she
said to “tell Q, Wendy, Ben, and Tyler that they were shining stars today.’
