People in Exceptional Children Department Help Others During the Holidays

Each year, the school system’s Exceptional Children (EC) Department takes on holiday projects.

For 14 years now, they have picked a family that has a child in the EC program. The family is invited to create a list of items that they need and that they would like to have. Although most of the people who participate are associated with the EC Department, everyone is welcome to participate and people from other departments at Central Office regularly do.

“Last year, we had school board members participate,” said Laurie Lytton, the EC department’s Medicaid billing specialist.

Last year, Lytton said, they collected so many items that they needed an SUV and a pick-up truck to deliver everything. This year’s family has six children – three girls and three boys.

The department also participates in the Lifeline Shoebox project. The idea is to gather a shoe-box worth of everyday items that someone in a nursing home or assisted-living facility needs – toothbrush, Kleenex, shampoo, etc. Last year, the department filled 46 shoe boxes. They are still collecting this season.

Since Lifeline Shoebox Ministry was established in 2008, it has served 2,103 residents in 33 facilities in Forsyth, Stokes, Yadkin and Surry counties. Those wanting to donate can catch up with Heather Surratt at hjsurratt@wsfcs.k12.nc.us
