An Hour of Code at Wiley Magnet Middle School

This week, students in grades six through eight at Wiley Magnet Middle School participated in the Hour of Code, a global movement designed to focus on coding and computer science.

“Dec. 8 through 14 is Computer Science Education Week and, to celebrate, students watched tutorials and learned basic coding skills,” said Scarlett Mooney, the school’s STEAM Instructional Coach & Magnet Coordinator. “Through coding students learned problem-solving skills, used logical thinking and had a chance to show their creative ability!

“Teachers and students were engaged in coding activities that required using geometry skills such as calculating the degree of an angle to design various patterns. Students also learned different career aspects related to the computer science fields and how to pursue coding as a hobby.

“Tracy Landreth, Wiley’s Technology Facilitator, coordinated this event for our school. Mrs. Landreth recognized the importance of this global event and wanted Wiley students to join in the fun of learning in an innovative way. Mrs. Landreth discussed with students high school opportunities with computer science and coding also.

“A sixth grade student said, ‘I learned what it takes to make a code. Smarts + patience = Hour of Code.’ To see more of our student’s work follow us on Twitter @WileyMS.”
