In November, Instructional Superintendent Trish Gainey
invited people throughout the school system to write about those who embody the
school system’s Core Values.
General Counsel Dionne Jenkins responded with this note:
“I would like to recognize the Operations Department, and,
specifically, Wayne Loflin for his never-ending commitment to students and for
tirelessly working for the benefit of the district.”
“Wayne embodies the Core Values of collaboration and integrity.”
Loflin, who has been with Winston-Salem/Forsyth County
Schools for 30 years, is the Chief Operations Officer. On Thursday, people in the
department recognized Loflin with a special breakfast.
“This is an opportunity for us to recognize one of our own,”
said Darrell Walker, the Assistant Superintendent of Operations before
presenting Loflin with a certificate.
“This is all about you this morning. I appreciate your
dedication. We appreciate what you do every day.”
In turn, Loflin spoke about how much he appreciates those
he works with.
“Without our team, I wouldn’t be here today,” he said.
Loflin’s daughter Brittney Myers works in Central Office as
a Purchasing Specialist, and she came upstairs for the recognition.
Myers is recently back from maternity leave. As it happens,
the person who usually takes care of her daughter, Layla, during the day was
sick. Loflin had taken a day off to take care of Layla, and, when he came in
for the recognition, he brought Layla with him.
One of the points that Loflin made later was that, early on
in his career, his drive to do well at work kept him from spending as much time
with his family as he would have liked. In retrospect, he wishes he had made it
more of a priority to spend time with them.
“One of the things I preach really hard is ‘Take that time
with your family,’” he said. “You can’t get back that lost family time.”
He has been a great father, Myers said, and she appreciates
everything about him.
Asked what she has learned from him, she said, “Always give
it my all.”
