The
Student Service Club at Ward Elementary volunteered to participate in The Great
American Clean Up by picking up trash at Hobby Park on Saturday, April 9.
“Saturday
was an extremely cold, windy day, but students found that when they started
walking the trails at the park picking up trash the trees broke a lot of the
wind and it was actually warmer,” said Robin Harden, one of the club sponsors.
“Students
not only picked up trash, but enjoyed the lake, the bridges and even searched
for crawdads. Mr. Harden and Alec almost picked up a black snake inside an old,
abandoned tire.
“The
students found that picking up the trash was less of a chore and more of an
adventure because of all the things in nature they explored on Saturday. The
older students were wonderful to assist the younger students and a great time
was had by all.”
Eight students
participated in the event from Ward and one from Meadowlark Middle School.
They students
were: Janiece Ricard, Haley and Tyler Eisenbraun, Arianna Leon, Wesley Garrett,
Aubrey McCarthy, Ian Sanchez, Olden Jordan and Alec Harden.
Kristy
Franklin and Robin Harden are the sponsors for the Student Service Club.
Parents who volunteered were Glenn Harden, Blanca Leon, Will Garrett,
Martha Sanchez, and Heather McCarthy.
Keep Winston-Salem
Beautiful provided a doughnut breakfast and a pizza lunch for the volunteers.
