At
Union Cross Elementary School, students and staff are well under way with
working to help others during the holidays.
In
conjunction with the school’s annual Harvest Lunch last week, students brought
in canned food and other nonperishable food items. At the Harvest Lunch,
students dress up and staff members serve them lunch.
Plus,
the school’s recent Penny War for the United Way raised almost $3,700 in change.
“The
kids got really excited about it,” said David Bennett, the school’s assistant
principal. “They had a lot of fun. I saw a lot of class bonding.”
The
food drive and Penny War gave everyone the opportunity to talk about the
importance of helping others, Bennett said. “We are very fortunate here at
Union Cross. We want to give back to our community.”
The
State Employees Credit Union on NC 66 in Kernersville let Bennett use its coin
sorting machine, and, over the course of the war, Bennett made four trips there
to count up all the contributions and have them converted into a check.
Next
week, some of the fifth-graders will play members of the faculty in battle
ball, a game similar to dodge ball, for Penny War prizes.
