Through November and the early part of December, middle
school students at John F. Kennedy High School participated in the Samaritan
Ministries Penny Campaign.
“Their homebase time was used to teach about community
service and thinking of others” said David Hooker, who teaches physical
education. “They saw how hunger and homelessness is everywhere.
“We asked our students to collect pennies, spare
change and dollars during this time. Our
friendly competition was between homebases. The highest contributing sixth-grade,
seventh-grade and eighth-grade homebases received a ‘breakfast’ type reward. Our total amount collected this year was
$235.30. This was a $70 increase over last year.”
This year the Samaritan Ministries has set a goal of
$90,000 to feed and shelter people who are hungry and homeless, Hooker said.
“It takes just 208 pennies to provide someone with a
hot meal,” he said. “We all have our own stories of people who are hungry and
homeless.”
In closing Hooker, cited Matthew 25:35: ‘For I was
hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me
something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in.”
