On
Wednesday morning, Southwest Elementary students participated in an assembly
for a reading project that could send Principal Matt Dixson to the roof.
“We
had the entire school today with the help of the West Forsyth drumline and
cheerleaders,” Dixson said. “The cheerleaders got the kids pumped up with
cheers about reading with the help of the drumline.
“The
kids are supposed to earn 20,000 points and are currently at 8,000. We talked
to the kids about the importance of reading. I encouraged them that, although
they may not like to read, it’s only because they haven’t found the perfect
book yet that grabs them.
“I
also told them that although there are video games they don’t like, it doesn’t
mean they don’t like video games…books are the same way. I encouraged them to
talk with their teacher and our media specialist to help them find a great
book.”
Along
the way, the students will be offered such incentives as attending a Wake
Forest University women’s basketball game and, in the spring, a Dash baseball game.
Dixson
told students that, if they earn 20,000 points by May, he will head to the school’s
roof. He fully expects that to happen.
“It’s
looking like I’ll head to the roof in May,” Dixson said.
