Future Business Leaders of America at John F. Kennedy High

This comes to us from Deborah Cochran, who teaches business at John F. Kennedy High School:

JF Kennedy High School has an active business club on campus.  FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) is a Career Technical Student Organization.  Since 2015, our students have participated in Regional and State competitions and have an impressive record in placing in the Top 4 every year. Our Advisers are Marcus Neal, Jeff Hardin, Deborah Cochran and Mae Witherspoon.

JF Kennedy High School represented the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools at the Triad Regional Competition held at East Davidson High School in Thomasville on Jan. 12.  David Mendoza (top left) placed 4th in Public Speaking event.  In 2018, sisters Parish and Persiagh Torbit placed in the Top 4.  In 2017, Josh Keels (2nd from top right)  and Zoe Fulp placed.  In 2016, Josh Keels and Stephen Sullivan placed.

JF Kennedy's Career Management class submitted a video to Raleigh in the Experience More Video Competition. There were 36 entries, and the judges had a tough time determining the winners. Our video on the importance of Work-Based Learning was highlighted at the Experience More Summit on Work Based Learning /NCBCE Annual Meeting on Dec. 7 and on their social media pages. (Kiya Edwards, Officer of the Governor, NC Business Committee for Education).

The future depends on Future Business Leaders of America. JF Kennedy's business teachers continue to make an investment in our youth. Ms. Deborah Cochran focuses on best practices and different learning modalities like Screencastify and Flipgrid.

FBLA participates at March of Dimes Walk as our community project.

Students have voice and choice in the classroom and have completed Passion Projects on their Career Selection and College Comparisons. Students have created accounts in Screencastify and record themselves during mock Interviews. They record in groups on Flipgrid. This helps the student with public speaking.  Students can see themselves in real-world applications. I strive to connect classroom learning to a lifetime of real-world success.

I use diverse resources and a variety of instructional modalities.

Principal Keisha Gabriel and Assistant Principal Kim Ashby are highly supportive of our clubs at JF Kennedy High School.
