"Fireside Chats" for Kindergarten Teachers

A Fireside Chat at Konnoak Elementary
Eva C. Phillips, the Program Manager for Ready Schools, has been leading a series of “fireside chats” with kindergarten teachers in each zone of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools.

The first chats, which are optional and are scheduled to last about one hour, were held in the fall. Another series of chats have been scheduled for May and Phillips is hoping that kindergarten teachers will participate.

This second round in the series will focus on relevant topics for kindergarten teachers in the district, specifically including talking about the school system’s new Kindergarten Belief Satement.

“These afternoon chats are optional,” Phillips said. “However, I encourage kindergarten teachers in each zone to attend if at all possible.  Having at least one representative from each school is important, if all are not able to attend.”

“These conversations will help us to provide a more consistent and clear message about bringing a more balanced approach to kindergarten instruction based on current research and resources. I hope teachers will make plans to be there to hear about the district's vision for kindergarten and to provide feedback on this new belief statement.”

“Spring chats have already been held for Zones 3 and 5 at Middle Fork and Speas elementary schools. We have had a great turnout so far which have led to very powerful and informative discussions. The remaining chats are scheduled as follows and teachers are asked to register in My Learning Plan."

Zone 1:  Thursday, May 11 from 4-5 pm at Smith Farm Elementary
Zone 2:  Thursday, May 25 from 4-5 pm at Petree Elementary
Zone 4:  Monday, May 15 from 4-5 pm at Old Town Elementary
Zone 6:  Monday, May 22 from 4-5 pm at Meadowlark Elementary
Zone 7:  Monday, May 8 from 4-5 pm at Diggs-Latham Elementary
Zone 8:  Wednesday, May 24, from 4-5 at Easton Elementary
