Alex's Lemonade Fundraiser at Southwest Elementary Raises Nearly $6,000

At the annual Alex’s Lemonade Stand fundraiser to combat childhood cancer, the staff and students in the Exceptional Children program at Southwest Elementary School raised $5,926.  

The fifth annual fundraiser was held on June 7. Along with lemonade for 50 cents a cup, the event included a silent auction.

“Tuesday, June 7th was wonderful!” said Maria Vernon, the speech language pathologist at Southwest. “We sold over 1,300 cups of lemonade and raised more than $5,500 to support Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation. But, most importantly, we saw how our school, community and friends supported our five classes of children who happen to be exceptional. Our students worked on their communication skills while helping other kids! 

“This event would not be possible each year without the support of our parents, volunteers and teachers! You all had such positive and encouraging things to say about our lemonade stand! I am so glad that you are all truly dedicated to the success of all children.  Thank you all for everything each of you does each day and for all the smiles and love you showed our students on Tuesday, June 7!

“Our students and staff have such BIG hearts to help others, which is truly what this event was all about!  We could not have this event each year without your support and we are counting on it again next year!"

The Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation (ALSF) grew out of the front-yard lemonade stand that Alexandra “Alex” Scott set up. In 2000, Alex, who was 4 at the time, announced that she wanted to hold a lemonade stand to raise money to help find a cure for all children with cancer. Alex died on Aug. 1 in 2004.

Since Alex held that first stand, the Foundation bearing her name has evolved into a national fundraising movement, complete with thousands of supporters across the country carrying on her legacy of hope.To date, Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation has raised more than $120 million toward fulfilling Alex’s dream of finding a cure, funding over 550 pediatric cancer research projects nationally.
