The past couple of years, students have been talking
about putting on a fashion show, and, when Christopher's Formal Wear offered to
become a partner, everyone jumped at the chance, said Tim Sparks, who teaches
marketing and business.
“Lisa Groce, the owner at Christopher's was
extremely helpful in the planning stages of the show, and provided our students
in excess of $19,000 in prom dresses and tuxedos to wear for the night,” Sparks
said. “It was a pleasure to work with Christopher's Formal Wear to make this
year's show such a success, and maybe even more important were the wonderful
students who did such a professional job in the show. It was an honor to make
this show a reality.”
Audrey Hayes, who teaches family and consumer
sciences, said, “One of the goals of every CTE course in Winston-Salem/Forsyth County
Schools is to provide students with real life experiences. This show certainly achieved
this objective for the 26 students who made it such a success.”
The show raised money for the West Forsyth DECA club.
DECA is an international club for marketing students, with more than 200,000
members worldwide. Admission was $5. The money raised will be used for DECA community-service
projects and to provide students with more opportunities to compete in marketing
competitions.
“Through the generosity of local businesses, we
were able to give away over $750 worth of gift cards and incentives to help
many West Forsyth students have a more magical prom night,” Sparks said.
The giveaways included two dinner gift cards worth
$100 and discounts at local florists and tanning companies. Black Tie Transportation
brought two stretch limousines to display in front of the entrance to the show.
The show was such a success, Sparks said, that West Forsyth
DECA and the Career and Technical Education Department at the school plan to do
another show during the 2015-16 school year. It will be even bigger and better,
said Sparks.
