Diggs-Latham Teacher Has Art Exhibit in Danbury Gallery

Amanda Adams Gordon, the Art Teacher and A+ Magnet Coordinator, at Diggs-Latham Elementary A+ Magnet School is having a solo exhibit of her original artwork during the month of September.

The exhibit is being held in the Apple Gallery of the Stokes County Arts Council in The Arts Place of Stokes. Gordon is a Board Member and Visual Arts Chair there as Stokes is her home county.  She was instrumental in jurying art for the original opening of The Arts Place Store as well as monthly exhibits in their Apple Gallery and bimonthly exhibits in the Jayebird Gallery of Hanging Rock State Park.

This exhibit of Amanda Gordon's work includes just under 100 pieces of art including digital photography, acrylic and watercolor paintings, weavings, pen and ink drawings, and more.  The exhibit will officially open with a reception on Friday, September 6 from 5:30 to 7:30pm in the Apple Gallery located at 502 N. Main Street in Danbury.

Gordon said this exhibit is symbolic of her journey as an artist and art teacher.  It shows many aspects of her style in mixed media formats as her work tends to focus on the composition of a place captured in a photograph or highlight the unique textures or light and shadows around the subject being drawn or painted.

The art in the exhibit spans approximately 20 years of her career but is her second time exhibiting in this gallery.  Gordon has also exhibited at Delta Fine Arts Center in a collaborative Art Teacher exhibit, two local fairs, the annual Northwest Regional Photography exhibit, and the Surry County Juried Artist Exhibit.

Gordon has dedicated this exhibit to the memory of her grandmother, Fronia Gravely, who passed away in October 2018 but was a major influence on Gordon's life.  The exhibit is also dedicated in honor of Mr. Rick Flanery, Gordon's art teacher mentor who was a professional potter and worked for Old Salem/Salem College years ago creating reproduction pottery before ending his career teaching high school art. Gordon stated that Mr. Flanery helped her polish her skills and prepare her for college.

Amanda Gordon is currently in her 16th year teaching art in our district.  In 2016 and 2017, she was named A+ Teacher of the Year, WS/FCS Magnet Teacher of the Year, and WS/FC Arts Council Educator of the Year.  Gordon is a Teacher Leader in our Teacher Academy and has served as a model classroom and mentor. She also serves on the Art Teacher Leadership Team. At her school, Gordon is known for writing mini grants, creating the annual yearbook, planning Black History Month events, managing social media and blogs, designing marketing materials, and working closely with community, business, and parent partnerships.
