NAF Career Academy Students Participate in Mini-Conference

This comes to us from Vicky Wheeler, the school system’s School-to-Career Coordinator/Academy Director:

On March 22, more than 100 juniors who participate in the school system’s NAF Career Academy programs participated in a #TogetherFutureReady mini-conference.

Volunteers from about 50 businesses offered a number of learning sessions. Organizations represented included the N.C. Restaurant & Lodging Association, Modern Woodman of American, Lowes Foods, and Wells Fargo.

The conference was sponsored by the Work-Based Learning Committee of the NAF Career Academy Advisory Board. Vicky Wheeler, the school system’s School-to-Career Coordinator/Academy Director, worked with Rodessa Mitchell, the Vice President for Education & Workforce Development for the Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce, to organize the conference.

“The goal of the event was to prepare students with soft skills – interview and networking techniques and a resume,” Wheeler said.

Earlier, Wheeler had given students templates for business cards to use in making cards to share with business people.

“All this was in preparation for their seeking of a summer internship,” Wheeler said.

Forsyth Technical Community College provided the space for the conference at the Mazie Woodruff Center on Lansing Drive.

“It was a great day,” Wheeler said.
